What a toll it took. As my readers may know, my education journey was long and arduous. So, let’s take it from the top, shall we?
K-12 was a challenging time for me. I always struggled with subjects that didn’t pique my interest and felt that the time frame for classes and learning was unintuitive. The classes I did well in were few and far between, and I often daydreamed out of frustration with the teaching methods and subject matter. In many ways, this is where my love of comics started. While my teachers would drone on about the quadratic formula or whatever “formula of the week,” I would draw on the edges of my papers, creating narratives and characters to help me escape the confines of my desk.
Let’s fast-forward to the college years. When applying for schools, I initially wanted to pursue business. Although I had taken art classes from 6th grade to Senior year of high school, I felt as though my work wasn’t worth anything monetarily (Hindsight is 20/20, I know). So I went to business school!… for about half a year until I broke my leg and dropped out.
This was really a blessing in disguise. I used my time after recovering from injury to reevaluate what I found important in my life, specifically how much being a creative person meant to me. So, after a major move and enrolling in a community college art class, my life was back on track.
That was until that community college stopped offering art classes… But now I had found my resolve! after a few years of trying to figure it out on my own, I decided to make the big move to a significant city and enroll in an art school
This turned out to be a really advantageous choice for me, as I learned a ton of foundational skills in illustration. Art school also helped me refine what sort of work I wanted to do. I have always been a consumer of sequential art, and learning how to use my illustration skills to create comics was an eye-opening experience.consumer of sequential art and learning how to use my skills in illustration to create comics of my own was an eye opening experience.
